Alheava_dentro_o mar

“dentro_o mar” integra-se no projecto “Alheava” que Manuel Santos Maia tem vindo a desenvolver nos últimos anos, apresentando, em cada uma das suas diversas fases, diferentes abordagens a um mesmo tema: o resgate de memórias das vivências nas ex-colónias portuguesas. Nesta exposição o autor desmultiplicou os meios, que, assentes no princípio da instalação, iam do vídeo, passando pela maqueta e pela fotografia até ao objecto escultórico (um caixote vazio, alegoria de vivências, com as inscrições de origem – Moçambique – e de destino – Portugal).

As memórias familiares são aqui recontextualizadas com a sua integração na memória colectiva. O subtítulo “dentro_o mar” sugere-nos simultaneamente o espaço onde foi construída a ponte por onde transitaram as vidas que regressaram a Portugal após a descolonização e o tempo interior de cada história pessoal onde se encerram as memórias. Daqui partiu o autor para o resgate dos registos materiais e imateriais de que é composta a exposição – o álbum de bebé do autor, as fotografias da cidade de Nampula e a reconstituição digital do espaço da casa onde viveu.

Alheava_within_the sea

“within_the sea” forms part of the “Alheava” project that Manuel Santos Maia has been developing over recent years, presenting, in each of its various phases, different approaches on the same topic: the retrieval of the memories of life experiences in the former Portuguese colonies. In this exhibition the artist multiplied the resources used. These resources were placed at the beginning of the installation and ranged from video, scale models and photography to sculptures (an empty crate, that serves as an allegory for life experiences, with inscriptions concerning the place of origin -- Mozambique -- and destination -- Portugal).

The family memories are re-contextualised herein through their integration into the collective memory. The subtitle “within_the sea” simultaneously suggests the space that served as a bridge for many people on their return to Portugal after the de-colonialisation period and also the interior period of each personal history encapsulating the respective memories. On this basis, the artist retrieved the material and immaterial records included within the exhibition -- the photo album of the artist as a baby, photographs of the city of Nampula and the digital reconstitution of the space of his former dwelling.
