Neste novo passo no processo de reconstituição das memórias, confrontos e dificuldades que o regresso a Portugal representou para aqueles que tiveram de deixar para trás uma promessa de vida, Manuel Santos Maia introduz uma nova expressão no seu trabalho: a representação teatral. As seus pais são dadas as vozes de dois actores, num diálogo que percorre as vivências de um quotidiano estável em Moçambique, do confronto com a mudança e um conflito que lhes era estranho, ao vazio da perda e, finalmente, ao regresso a um país que nada tinha para lhes oferecer.

Na instalação Alheava – revisitação, o artista reconstitui a fachada da casa onde viveu em Nampula, que vem percorrendo todas as mostras do projecto Alheava. Numa parede, uma imagem do avô contrasta com o discurso do primeiro presidente moçambicano, e enquanto se percorre o espaço ouve-se a voz do pai do artista relatando momentos e histórias da família, circunstâncias que esta experienciou. No espaço são ainda projectadas as imagens de Nampula que foi registando em 8mm: imagens das festas, de viagens, da casa e da cidade.

In this new step in the process of reconstitution of memories, confrontations and difficulties that the return to Portugal represented for those who had to leave a life promise behind them, Manuel Santos Maia introduced a new expression within his work: theatrical representation. The voices of two actors are conferred to his parents, in a dialogue that addresses the living experiences of stable daily in life in Mozambique, the confrontation with change and conflict that they were not used to, the void of loss, and finally the return to the country that had nothing to offer them.

In the installation Alheava – revisitation, the artist rebuilt the façade of the house where he lived in Nampula, that appeared in all the exhibitions of the project, Alheava. An image of his grandfather projected on the wall is contrasted with the speech of the first Mozambican president, and as one walks around the space, one hears the voice of the artist’s father as he recounts family stories and experiences that he personally experienced. 8mm filmic images of Nampula are also projected on the walls: images of festivities, travels, home life and the city.
